PT Indonesia Power as a subsidiary of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) continues to use desalination technology to address the problem of clean water in the north coast of Jakarta.

This technology is also applied by Indonesia Power in the Priok Power Generation and O&M Service Unit (POMU) which manages 4 blocks of Steam Gas Power Plant (PLTGU) with 10 gas turbines and 4 steam turbines with an installed capacity of 2,723 megawatts (MW) and 6 Diesel Power Plant (PLTD) with a capacity of 101 MW.

In the power plant area, distillate water separated from seawater is used for unit operations, fire fighting systems, domestic water, and others. The remaining water from the desalination process then flows back to the sea.

However, since 2017, the potential of desalination residual water that has quite high discharge has been reused as an energy source for the Micro Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH).

The electricity produced from the PLTMH is used for lighting office buildings and helps meet the electricity needs of the residents’ hydroponic gardens in the Sunter area, North Jakarta.

Senior POMU PRO Executive M. Syaifuddin said, if previously the desalination residual water was just dumped into the sea through an outfall with a discharge of 207.4 m3/h, now the potential energy of the desalination residue is converted into electricity through PLTMH.

“The electricity generated is used in office buildings and also stored in a 12 V 100AH battery which is used as a source of electricity for the hydroponic garden in Sunter,” he said in a press release on the ESDM Ministry website, Thursday (6/25).

Syaifuddin explained, with the operation of this PLTMH, the potential storage of energy produced reaches 6 kW-8 kW and will be used to illuminate the “Priok Learning Center” Building.

Also, electricity stored in a 12V 100Ah battery will be channelled for community empowerment programs while addressing food security issues in the POMU PRO 2 ring area in Sunter Muara, titled “Taman Hatinya Sunter”.

The program contains business activities that sell hydroponic organic vegetables such as pokcoy, spinach, kale, lettuce and others.

GT, HRSG & ST BLOK 3 operator Raihan Muhammad added, not only does it save energy, but the surrounding community is also helped to start the pump in the hydroponic garden with new renewable energy (EBT) stored in batteries in the form of battery packs.

“We as plant operators will fully support this program by maintaining the reliability of PLTMH and monitoring it regularly,” he said.

In fact, amid the Covid-19 pandemic that has hampered community activities, the PLTMH environmental program is still able to revive activities and increase the income of the surrounding community.

“In addition to driving hydroponic activities, energy from this battery is also used by residents for making pastries to lighting the production houses,” said Raihan.

The efficiency of electric power generated from battery batteries can reduce production costs during the production period so that citizens can make savings and get more profits.
