Myanmar is a huge market for water and wastewater sector among Southeast Asian region. Additionally, Myanmar is facing the challenge of waste water treatment in industrial sector but also technical training for the future generation.
“One of the key challenges that registered industries are facing in industrial sector is inclusiveness. Very few factories are installed waste water treatment plants,” U Sein Thaung Oo, vice president of Myanmar Food Processors and Exporters Association, mentioned during the panelist session in German waste water and water supply infrastructure conference. Therefore, how to manage the inclusiveness of all factories in Myanmar becomes a crucial problem regarding to waste water treatment.
“As the nation was closed for many years, the technology is primitive and also the standard of working is very traditional practice way of operation so that environmental studies, environmental concerns and even the quality standards are not very well maintained,” Thoung Win, director of Green Economy Green Growth Association added his opinions upon challenges in Myanmar.
Regarding to water supply system in Yangon, water demand is still required to fulfill the Yangon city regardless of extracting the water from underground water. U Myo Thein director of Water and Sanitation Department of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) uttered that concerning with distribution of water in Yangon, Lagunbyin and Kokowa water supply projects by 2025 will provide 40 (million?) gallons and 60 gallons per day.
The German Water Partnership is a strong network of private and public companies, research institutes, associations and institutions of the German water industry. Currently, GWP unites 350 members from industry, research and politics which can provide durable high-quality products and water management solution particularly in developing countries.
During Myanmar’s water and waste water infrastructure conference on Nov 12 at Novotel Hotel in Yangon, the German participating companies pitched their company profiles one by one. Their expertise are related to water and waste water treatment, consultancy & engineering for water, wastewater, hydrometry, meteorology, supply and disposal systems and measuring & control technology.
Mr. Falk Woelm, advisor of German Water Partnership said that they can address the right partner within their members in German Water Partnership and besides, they gather information which is necessary to fulfill the requirements and distributed to their members in a long-term collaboration.
The five-day delegation intended to introduce German Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to the water and wastewater industry in Yangon, Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay to explore Myanmar’s market.
